Shyonak, Sona Patha (Oroxylum Indicum)

Shyonak Plant Identification:

The Shyonak, or Oroxylum indicum, is a tiny perennial tree that grows 8–15 meters tall and is primarily found in evergreen forests.

The plant has 0.5-1.5 m long, 2-3 pinnate leaves with opposing pinnae; 2-4 pairs of leaflets that are 6-12 cm long and 4-10 cm broad, elliptic or oblong, acuminate, and glabrous; and 6-15 mm long petioles on the lateral leaflets.

There are many 0.3–0.6 meter long flowers with pinkish-yellow and reddish-purple interiors. The flower stalks are one foot in length.

General Description:

Shyonak, also known as Oroxylum indicum, is mentioned in several Ayurvedic texts, including the Charak Samhita and Sushrut.

As an antiseptic and astringent, Charak has advised Shyonak for non-healing ulcers, feminine problems, and dysentery. Shyonak leaves have aloe-emodin and anthraquinone, which make them emollient.

Due to their anti-allergic qualities, the root and stem bark are used to treat measles, erythema, urticaria, jaundice, asthma, sore throats, laryngitis, hoarseness, diarrhea, and dysentery in infants.

This herb's chemical components include chrysin, aloe-emodin, baicalein, tetetuin, and oroxindin.
