Shadbindu Oil: Ayurvedic Nasya Oil for Nasal Care, Head Comfort & Daily Sinus Wellness
30 ml  |  For Nasya & External Use  |  Traditional Classical Ayurvedic Formula

There is something quietly grounding about a wellness practice that has survived a thousand years without needing a rebrand. No trending ingredient. No clinical trial headline. Just a small bottle of herbal oil, a few drops, and five minutes of stillness in the morning.

Shadbindu Taila is one of Ayurveda’s most trusted Nasya preparations, a formulation referenced in classical texts including the Ashtanga Hridayam and the Bhaishajya Ratnavali, traditionally prescribed for the care of the nasal passages, the comfort of the head and sinuses, and the clarity of the entire upper body. The name itself tells you how to use it: Shad means six, Bindu means drops, a formula named after its traditional daily dose.

What you get in this bottle is that same classical preparation: Bhringraj, Yashtimadhu, Sunthi, Vidanga, Erandamool, and Jivanti, infused into pure Sesame Oil. Seven herbs. One specific purpose. Your nose is the gateway to your head, and this oil is made for that gateway.

It’s the kind of ritual that takes two minutes. And most people who try it don’t stop.

What Makes Shadbindu Oil Different
In Ayurveda, the nose is described as the Shiraso Dwaram, the doorway to the head. The nasal passages share channels with the sinuses, eyes, ears, throat, and mind, which means that caring for the nasal mucosa has an effect that goes well beyond nasal health alone.

Nasya, the practice of applying herbal oil to the nostrils, is one of the five classical Panchakarma therapies, and in its daily, gentle form (Pratimarsha Nasya), it is one of the cornerstones of Ayurvedic Dinacharya, the morning wellness routine. Shadbindu Taila is specifically formulated for this practice.

What sets this formula apart is its balance. The warming, penetrating herbs, Sunthi and Vidanga, open the channels and clear accumulated Kapha from the upper respiratory tract. The nourishing, cooling herbs, Yashtimadhu, Jivanti, and Bhringraj, prevent aggravation and nourish the nasal tissues that clearing can leave vulnerable. Sesame Oil carries everything deep. It is a formula designed to move and nourish at the same time. That balance is what makes it suitable for daily use.

Key Benefits:

• Supports clear, healthy, and moisturised nasal passages
• Traditionally used for Nasya (nasal oil application) in Ayurvedic self-care
• Helps ease head discomfort, heaviness, and facial tension
• Nourishes and protects the nasal mucosa, especially useful in dry, dusty, or air-conditioned environments
• Supports Prana Vata balance, the vital energy of the head and sensory organs
• Promotes relaxation and a clearer, calmer state of mind
• Helps pacify Kapha accumulation in the upper respiratory tract
• Supports the comfort and health of the sinus, ear, and eye region through nasal care
• Suitable for daily Dinacharya (Ayurvedic morning wellness) routines

The Six Herbs, And Why They Matter

Erandamool (Ricinus communis, castor root): One of Ayurveda’s most respected Vata-pacifying botanicals, used here in root form, which has a warmer and more penetrating quality than the seed. Traditionally valued for supporting the movement of Prana in the upper body and addressing dryness and stiffness in the head region.

Jivanti (Leptadenia reticulata): A classical Rasayana herb, meaning it nourishes and rejuvenates the tissues over time. Jivanti is traditionally valued for its strengthening properties and for supporting the vitality of the nasal and mucosal tissues in Nasya preparations.

Bhringraj (Eclipta alba): Among the most celebrated herbs in Ayurveda for the head, eyes, and sensory organs. Bhringraj is Medhya (mind-supporting) and Rasayana in nature, traditionally used to promote clarity, comfort in the head region, and a calmer nervous system. Its presence in a Nasya formulation is deliberate.

Sunthi (Zingiber officinale, dry ginger): Warming, Kaphaghna (Kapha-reducing), and deeply penetrating. Sunthi helps open the nasal channels, improves absorption of the herbal formula into the tissues, and clears the congestion and heaviness of excess Kapha in the upper body. Think of it as the delivery mechanism.

Vidanga (Embelia ribes): Traditionally valued for its channel-clearing (Srotoshodhana) properties in the upper respiratory tract. Vidanga supports the movement and removal of accumulated matter in the nasal passages and works in synergy with Sunthi to enhance the formula’s clearing action.

Yashtimadhu (Glycyrrhiza glabra, licorice root): The balancing herb of this formula. Sweet, soothing, and deeply nourishing to mucous membranes, it moderates the heat of Sunthi and Vidanga, protects the nasal tissues from dryness, and supports the throat and upper respiratory tract. Without Yashtimadhu, a formula this warming could aggravate. With it, the formula works gently.

How To Use
For daily Nasya, Pratimarsha Nasya: Warm the bottle slightly by placing it in warm water for a few minutes. Oil at body temperature is more comfortable and absorbs better.

1. Lie down or tilt your head back gently.
2. Using a dropper, instill 2–6 drops into each nostril.
3. Gently sniff the oil inward and remain still for 30–60 seconds.
4. Lightly massage the nostrils, bridge of the nose, and forehead.
5. Perform in the morning, after bathing, before going outdoors.

Daily Nasya is a cumulative practice, not a one-time fix. Consistency matters more than quantity.

For facial and head massage: Apply a small amount to the fingertips and massage gently around the forehead, temples, sides of the nose, and nasal area. Use light, circular motions. Can be done as part of a morning self-care routine or in the evening for relaxation.

For practitioner-directed Nasya therapy: If you are using Shadbindu Oil as part of a formal Nasya session under the guidance of an Ayurvedic practitioner, follow their prescribed dosage, timing, and protocol. Classical Nasya therapy may involve higher doses and preparation steps not required for daily home use.

Use as directed by a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner for nasal application. Consult a healthcare professional before use if pregnant, nursing, or under medical supervision.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q. What does “Shadbindu” mean?
"Shad" means six, and "Bindu" means drops; the name is a direct reference to the traditional daily dosage of this oil in Nasya practice: six drops per nostril. It is one of the few Ayurvedic formulations named after how you use it, which tells you how central that application method is to the formula itself.

Q. What is Shadbindu Oil traditionally used for?
Shadbindu Taila is a classical Ayurvedic Nasya preparation referenced in the Ashtanga Hridayam and the Bhaishajya Ratnavali for the care of the head region (Urdhvajatru Vikaras, conditions above the clavicle). It is traditionally indicated for nasal care, head comfort, sinus support, and the health of the eyes, ears, and throat, all of which share channels with the nasal passages in the Ayurvedic anatomical framework.

Q. What is Nasya?
Nasya is one of the five Panchakarma therapies in classical Ayurveda, specifically designed for the care and cleansing of the head region. In its daily preventive form (Pratimarsha Nasya), it involves instilling a few drops of medicated oil into the nostrils each morning. In Ayurveda, the nose is considered the doorway to the head, and Nasya nourishes the nasal passages, balances Prana Vata, and supports clarity and comfort throughout the entire head region.

Q. Can Shadbindu Oil be used every day?
Yes. The Pratimarsha (preventive, daily) form of Nasya with a small quantity of oil is specifically designed for regular, long-term use. Most Ayurvedic practitioners recommend making it a consistent part of the morning routine rather than using it occasionally. The benefits build over time.

Q. Is it safe to put oil inside the nose?
Shadbindu Oil is a classical preparation formulated specifically for nasal application; the herbs and Sesame Oil base are chosen for their suitability in Nasya practice. If you are new to Nasya, start with 2 drops per nostril and observe how your body responds before moving to the full 6-drop dose. For any ongoing nasal or sinus conditions, using it under the guidance of a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner is recommended.

Q. Can I also use Shadbindu Oil for a head or facial massage?
Yes. In addition to Nasya, the oil can be applied around the forehead, temples, and nasal area for a gentle facial or head massage. Many people include this as part of an extended morning self-care routine. It is not heavy and absorbs reasonably well without leaving a greasy residue.

Q. What does Shadbindu Oil smell like?
The oil has a warm, earthy, slightly spiced aroma, characteristic of Sesame Oil infused with dry ginger and Bhringraj. It is grounding rather than sharp, with a depth that many people find calming. The scent becomes part of the ritual.

Q. Which dosha does Shadbindu Oil primarily support?
Shadbindu Taila works best for Vata and Kapha imbalances in the head region: dryness, congestion, heaviness, and tension. The warming herbs (Sunthi, Vidanga) address Kapha accumulation, while the nourishing base and Yashtimadhu address Vata dryness. If you have a predominantly Pitta constitution or experience heat-related symptoms in the head or sinuses, consult an Ayurvedic practitioner before using regularly.

Q. How is Shadbindu Oil different from a regular massage oil?
Shadbindu Oil is formulated specifically for Nasya, nasal application. The herbs and oil base are chosen for their properties in the head region and their suitability for use in and around the nasal passages. A general massage oil is designed for external skin application on the body and is not appropriate for Nasya. Never use a standard body or massage oil for nasal practice.
