Warts Treatment: Types, Causes & Effective Removal Options

Warts Treatment: Understanding Types, Causes & How to Remove Warts

Warts are small, rough skin growths caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). They can appear anywhere on the body and vary in appearance depending on their type and location. Effective wart treatment depends on the type of wart, where it is located, and how your skin responds to treatment. While some warts resolve on their own, others benefit from targeted wart removal approaches - from over-the-counter options to professional care.

What Are Warts?

Warts are non-cancerous skin growths that develop when HPV infects the outer layer of skin, typically through a small cut or break. They often appear as rough, raised bumps and may have tiny dark dots at their centre - these are small, clotted blood vessels. Warts can grow individually or in clusters and are mildly contagious through direct skin contact.

A verruca (also called a plantar wart) is simply a wart that grows on the sole of the foot. The term is commonly used in the UK and parts of Europe, but it refers to the same HPV-caused growth.

HPV and Warts: Understanding the Connection

All warts are caused by HPV - the human papillomavirus. There are more than 100 strains of HPV, and different strains tend to cause warts in different areas of the body. HPV warts are not the same as the high-risk HPV strains associated with cervical cancer; the strains that cause common skin warts are generally low-risk.

HPV enters the skin through small cuts, scrapes, or areas of broken skin. Warm, moist environments - such as swimming pools and communal showers - can increase the risk of picking up the virus. Children and people with weakened immune systems are more susceptible to developing HPV warts.

Common Types of Warts

Understanding the type of wart you have helps guide the most appropriate treatment approach.

Common Wart

The common wart (verruca vulgaris) typically appears on the fingers, hands, and knees. It has a rough, grainy surface and a rounded top. Common warts are among the most frequently occurring types and usually respond well to salicylic acid treatments or cryotherapy.

Plantar Wart

Plantar warts grow on the soles of the feet and can be painful due to the pressure of walking. Unlike other warts, they tend to grow inward rather than outward. Plantar wart treatment often requires more persistence - salicylic acid patches, duct tape occlusion, or professional freezing are commonly used approaches. A verruca is another name for a plantar wart.

Other Types

• Flat warts - Small, smooth warts that often appear in clusters on the face or legs
• Filiform warts - Thread-like warts that commonly grow around the mouth, nose, or eyes
• Periungual warts — Warts that develop around or under fingernails and toenails

Wart Treatment Options

There is no single wart treatment that works for everyone. The right approach depends on the wart type, location, size, and your skin's response. Most treatments aim to gradually destroy the wart tissue or stimulate the immune system to clear the virus.

Salicylic Acid for Warts

Salicylic acid is one of the most widely used and evidence-supported over-the-counter wart removers. It works by softening and breaking down the thickened skin of the wart layer by layer. Salicylic acid for warts is available as gels, liquids, and adhesive pads. For best results:

• Soak the wart in warm water for 5 minutes before applying
• Gently file away dead skin with an emery board
• Apply the salicylic acid product directly to the wart
• Cover and repeat daily - treatment may take several weeks

Salicylic acid is generally not recommended for use on the face or for people with diabetes or poor circulation without medical advice.

Other Medical Wart Removal Options

• Cryotherapy - A doctor or pharmacist applies liquid nitrogen to freeze and destroy the wart tissue. This is a common and effective wart removal method, though it may require multiple sessions.
• Cantharidin - A blistering agent applied by a healthcare provider that causes the wart to lift off the skin.
• Laser treatment - Used for warts that have not responded to other treatments.
• Minor surgery - Cutting away the wart under local anesthetic; typically a last resort due to the risk of scarring.

Home Remedies for Warts

Some people explore home-based approaches alongside or before seeking medical wart treatment. The evidence for most home remedies is limited, and results vary considerably between individuals. These should not be considered substitutes for medically established treatments, particularly for persistent or painful warts.

Commonly Used Home Approaches

Aloe Vera
Aloe vera gel has soothing and mild antimicrobial properties. Some people apply it to warts using a cotton ball and cover with a bandage, repeating daily. While it may help soothe irritated skin, there is limited clinical evidence that it removes warts.

Garlic
Garlic contains allicin, a compound with known antimicrobial properties. Crushed garlic applied topically is a traditional remedy, though scientific evidence supporting its effectiveness as a wart remover is limited. It may cause skin irritation if left on for extended periods.

Baking Soda and Castor Oil
Mixing baking soda with castor oil to form a paste and applying it overnight is a traditional home approach. Some people find it helps soften the wart over time, though clinical evidence is lacking.

Lemon Juice and Onion
Lemon juice has mild acidic properties, and some traditional practices combine it with onion as a topical application. Evidence for effectiveness is anecdotal.

Carrots and Olive Oil
A paste of grated carrot and olive oil is sometimes used as a traditional topical remedy. There is no strong clinical evidence to support this as an effective wart removal method.

Note: If a wart is painful, rapidly changing, or located on the face or genitals, consult a healthcare professional rather than relying on home remedies.

Supportive Nutrition

A well-functioning immune system plays a role in clearing HPV. Foods that support immune health include whole grains, sweet potatoes, broccoli, oranges, and sunflower seeds. While diet alone is unlikely to remove warts, maintaining good overall health may support your body's ability to fight the virus over time.

When to See a Doctor

Consider seeking professional advice for wart treatment if:

• The wart is painful, bleeding, or rapidly changing in appearance
• You have warts on your face, genitals, or around the nails
• Over-the-counter treatments have not worked after 12 weeks
• You have diabetes, a weakened immune system, or poor circulation
• You are unsure whether the growth is a wart

Treating warts early and consistently gives the best chance of successful wart removal. Whether you choose salicylic acid, cryotherapy, or a medically supervised approach, patience is key - most treatments for warts take several weeks to show results.
