Cholesterol Level

A yellowish, fatty substance called cholesterol is one of the body's fundamental components. Everybody who has high cholesterol is at risk for heart attack and stroke. In most cases, cholesterol is expressed as mg per 100 ML of blood. It happens when the body's lipoproteins, which are mostly of two types—low-density lipids (LDL) and high-density lipids (HDL)—lipids, occur. The danger of artery damage and the likelihood of heart disease increase with the body's LDL-to-cholesterol ratio. However, having HDL in the body significantly lowers the risk of heart problems.

Hypercholesterolemia is the medical term for an increase in the body's cholesterol levels.
