Tephrosia, afkomstig uit Noord-Amerika, is een geneeskrachtige plant. De plant wordt in de volksmond vaak "Timur" of "Tandpijnboom" genoemd, en de wetenschappelijke naam is Gevleugelde Stekelige Es. Het is een relatief kleine, tot 6 meter hoge, stekelige boom. De takken hebben een spanwijdte van meer dan 1,2 centimeter. De bladeren zijn drievoudig samengesteld, met vleugels aan de bladstelen. De blaadjes zijn gezaagd, puntig en elliptisch, en lijken op ovale bladeren.
De kleine gele bloemen komen tevoorschijn uit de bladoksels. Ze hebben zes tot acht kelkbladen. De bloemen hebben geen kroonbladen. Mannelijke bloemen lijken geel omdat ze zes tot acht meeldraden met grote helmknoppen hebben. Rijpe vrouwelijke bloemen hebben één tot drie cellen, zijn licht karmozijnrood van kleur en splitsen zich in twee uiteinden. De vruchten zijn opvallend, bijna bolvormig en roodbruin, en elke vrucht bevat één zaadje. De zaden zijn bolvormig en glanzend zwart van kleur.
Algemene beschrijving:
Het kruid Zanthoxylum alatum is rijk aan therapeutische eigenschappen. In de Ayurveda wordt het "tejohva" en "tumur" genoemd. Het staat erom bekend de vata- en kapha-dosha's te reguleren. Het is algemeen bekend dat vata de ademhaling, hartslag, oogknipperen en bloedsomloop reguleert. Kapha staat erom bekend het immuunsysteem, de huidconditie en de vochttoevoer naar alle delen van het lichaam te reguleren.
Tejohva kan dus een breed scala aan ziekten en aandoeningen behandelen die betrekking hebben op de huid, spijsvertering, bloedsomloop en het immuunsysteem. Elk deel van de plant staat bekend om zijn carminatieve, anthelmintische en maagversterkende eigenschappen. De antibacteriële, deodoriserende en desinfecterende eigenschappen van de fruitextracten maken ze effectief tegen koorts, tandproblemen, wormen en dyspepsie. Ze helpen ook bij het weghouden van vliegen dankzij hun deodoriserende en desinfecterende eigenschappen. De schors van de boom wordt gebruikt voor de behandeling van slangenbeten, diabetes, astma en tandvleesaandoeningen.
Het bevat een verscheidenheid aan belangrijke, functionele en actieve biochemische stoffen. De stambast bevat monoterpeenbevattende essentiële oliën, waaronder limoneen en linalool, evenals het amide armatamide. Het alcoholische extract van de stambast bevat een nieuw flavonoïde glycoside.
De zaden van de plant bevatten vluchtige stoffen zoals alkaloïden, flavonoïden, glycosiden, sterolen, vetzuren, ligninen, aminozuren en aromatische verbindingen, evenals actieve bestanddelen zoals enolzuur. De bladeren bevatten linalool, linolylacetaat, ketonen en verschillende soorten terpenen.
Elk van deze stoffen vertoont zijn werking wanneer dat nodig is. Tejohva heeft de neiging al zijn functies te vervullen omdat het zoveel verschillende verbindingen bevat.

Externe toepassingen van Tejohva:
Het heeft antiparasitaire, stimulerende en necrose-voorkomende eigenschappen. Het poeder wordt als stof op wonden aangebracht. Het wordt ook gebruikt bij hoofdpijn. Het sap van deze plant wordt gebruikt om keelpijn te behandelen en om mee te gorgelen bij tand- en mondproblemen.
Intern gebruik van Tejohva:
Ontstekingsremmende werking -Deze plant staat bekend om zijn ontstekingsremmende eigenschappen en vertoont een sterke onderdrukking van pro-inflammatoire cytokinen zoals interleukine-6 en tumornecrosefactor.
Antibacteriële werking -Het is bekend dat gramnegatieve bacteriën zoals Salmonella typhi en E. coli erdoor worden geremd, evenals grampositieve bacteriën zoals B. subtilis en Staphylococcus aureus.
Insecticide, muggenwerend middel, & larvicide activiteit -Het heeft de kracht om de afweerwerking tegen vrouwelijke Aedes-muggen te versterken. De larvicide werking van de zaadolie is aangetoond tegen Culex-, Aedes- en Anopheles-muggen.
Huidaandoeningen genezen -Fruitextracten zijn rijk aan verschillende soorten lipiden die kunnen helpen bij het voorkomen van irritatie van de gevoelige huid, veroorzaakt door blootstelling aan de zon, insectenbeten, scheren, chemische behandelingen en andere factoren.
Antioxidatieve activiteit -De ethanolische en methanolische extracten van deze vrucht vertonen eigenschappen die vrije radicalen neutraliseren.
Zenuwversterkend middel -Het is nuttig bij Vata-aandoeningen zoals verlamming en reumatoïde artritis, omdat het wordt gebruikt als een stimulerend middel voor het zenuwstelsel.
